Born on 14th May 1953 in Warsaw.

In 1977, graduated from the Faculty of Finance and Statistics at Warsaw School of Economics (WSE). In 1981, obtained the degree of doctor of economic sciences in econometrics and, in 1988, the degree of doctor habilitated in economy. Since 1991, assistant professor in WSE Institute of Econometrics.

1977-1978 - planning and economic analysis expert in Zjednoczenie Przemysłu Piwowarskiego (association of brewers) in Warsaw; 1981 - senior lecturer at ORGMASZ Machine-Building Industry Organization Institute in Warsaw.

In the 1980s and 1990s, taught econometrics at the Białystok branch of Warsaw University and at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw.

Scientist at WSE since 1981: 1982-1988 - scientific secretary of the Institute of Computer Science and Management; 1984-1994 - three-time head of the Econometrics Department. 1991-1992 - dean for Basic Studies; 1990-1993 -vice rector for education and training; 1993-1996 - vice rector for management; 1996-1999 - dean for Diploma Studies; 1999-2005 - rector of Warsaw School of Economics. Since 2005 - dean of the WSE Collegium of Economic Analysis.

2002-2005 - chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Higher Economic Educational Institutions and chairman of the Committee on Financing Higher Education of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Academic Institutions. Since 2005 - chairman of the Civil Service Council.

Co-created the educational system applied at the school, which enables every student to pursue an individual course of studies from year one.

Specializes in the macroeconomic analysis of structural transformations and in unemployment research. Was head expert in the Long-Term Research and Planning Team in the Ministers' Council Planning Committee (1988-1996) and expert in the Department of Spatial and Regional Planning of the Central Planning Agency (1990-1996). Member of the supervisory boards of Bank Millenium S.A. (since 1999), Fabryka Mebli Forte S.A., ZŁOMREX S.A. and HOOP S.A. (since 2004), and J.W.Construction (since 2007).

Chairman of the Main Board of the Academic Sports Association and member of the Presidium of the Board of the Polish Olympic Committee. Member of the Polish Sports Confederation, Academic E-Learning Association and Polish Economic Society.

In the Sixth Term Senate was member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Science, Education and Sports Committee.

Member of the Civic Platform Party of Poland.

Married, has one child.
