Born on 11th August 1946 in Nowy Sącz.
In 1969 graduated in the field of fine organic synthesis from the Chemical Faculty of Gdańsk University of Technology. In 1975 obtained the degree of Doctor of Chemical Sciences, in 1985 - the degree of Doctor Habilitated, in 1995 - the title of professor in chemical sciences. Expert in the field of organic synthesis, specializes in synthesis of biologically active compounds applied in medicine, agriculture and industry. Consultant in organic synthesis and in recycling of organic waste and pollutants. Author of numerous scientific articles, monographic treatises and production patents, including patents implemented in medication production. His scientific and implementing activities brought him prestigious awards and distinctions.
Associated with Gdańsk University of Technology since 1969. Among other positions held, was chairman of the Chemical Faculty Program Committee (1990-1992), scientific deputy dean of the Chemical Faculty (1991-1998), chairman of the Senate Science Committee (1993-1996). In 1993 became member of the Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology. Since 1997 - head of the Organic Chemistry Department of the Chemical Faculty; since 2002 - rector of Gdańsk University of Technology. Deputy chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Higher Technical Educational Institutions.
Between 1993 and 2002 was deputy chairman of the Chemistry Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, between 1999 and 2006 - member of the scientific council of the Polymer Chemistry Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In 2005 was member, then deputy chairman, of the supervisory board of the Lotos Group S.A.
Between 1978 and 1980 studied at the University of Gottingen as a fellow of the A. von Humboldt Foundation scholarship.
Lectured as visiting professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee, U.S.A. (1985-1989). Actively promotes collaboration between science and business in scientific associations and organizations. Initiator and organizer of regularly-scheduled meetings between politicians, scientists and businesspeople. Chairman of the board of the Polish Higher Education-Business Forum, deputy chairman of Gdańsk Scientific Society, member of the Association of Chemical Engineers and Technicians. In 2007 became chairman of the board of the National Research and Development Centre.
