Born on 23rd February 1963 in Bydgoszcz.
In 1986, graduated in political science, philosophy and economy (PPE) from Oxford University. 1986-1989 - war correspondent in Afghanistan and Angola.
In 1992, as deputy minister of national defence, participated in the initiation of Poland's accession to NATO.
1998-2001 - undersecretary of state in the ministry of foreign affairs. Was responsible for consular matters and contacts with Polish émigré and expatriate communities, supervised relations with Asian, African and Latin American states. At the same time, chaired Pomoc Polakom na Wschodzie foundation, which helped Polish communities in the former Soviet Union.
2002-2005 - resident fellow at American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and executive director of the New Atlantic Initiative.
Was a commentator on Polish and transatlantic issues on domestic and foreign TV channels. Wrote a book about his experiences as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and another entitled The Polish House - an Intimate History of Poland. His analytical articles often appear in Polish and foreign newspapers.
In 1988, won the World Press Photo award for best reporting work.
Organized international conferences on topics concerning Belarus, Ukraine, UN reform, NATO future, 25th anniversary of the Solidarity Trade Union and others.
Since November 2005, serves as the minister of national defence.
No political party affiliation.
Married, has two children.
