Born on 30th September 1946 in Krakow.
In 1970, graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automation, Electronics and Information Technology at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. In 1974, obtained the degree of doctor of engineering, in 1985 - degree of doctor habilitated, in 1995- title of professor of technical sciences. Specializes in sound control and applied information technology. Author of several dozen publications, expert opinions and studies for the industry. Academic teacher at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (1996- 1999 - vice rector of the Academy). 1989-2002 - member of the Education Minister's Expert Team; Environment Minister's Expert on Protection against Noise and Vibration.
1998-2002 - mayor of Krakow.
1999-2002 - chairman of the Union of Polish Metropolitan Cities and chairman of the Education and Culture Committee in the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasburg.
Belongs to several Polish and foreign scientific societies; member of the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, League against Noise and American Audio Engineering Society.
Involved in the effort to save and modernize "T. Sendzimir" Steelworks in Nowa Huta.
Member of the Solidarity Trade Union since 1980. Arrested in December 1981 upon the imposition of martial law by the communist regime.
Member of the Civic Platform political party.
Married, has two children.
