Born on 4th February 1944 in Kałęczewo (Łódź Province).

In 1966, graduated from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of Łódź University. In 1979, obtained the PhD degree, in 1990 - the degree of Doctor Habilitated, and in 1995 - the degree of Professor.

Academic teacher in Łódź University Faculty of Invertebrate Zoology and Hydrobiology.

1965-1970 - active in the underground anti-Communist organization Ruch, for which he was arrested in 1970 and one year later sentenced to seven years in jail. Was released in 1974 as a result of amnesty. Between 1977 and 1980, was active in Ruch Obrony Praw Człowieka i Obywatela (Movement for the Protection of Human and Civil Rights). Co-creator of the Solidarity Trade Union in Łódź Region and, since 1980, member of its board. Arrested in 1981; released 11 months later. Actively participated in the underground Solidarity movement. Co-founded Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe (Christian-National Alliance) and, since 1989, held leadership positions therein.

Author of some 50 scientific works, related mainly to the biology of water insects. Wrote many books on historical and political topics, as well as articles about history, politics and social problems. Recipient of many scientific awards.

Is involved in many organizations, for example the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia in Łódź, which he co-established and organized, Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy Rzeczypospolitej (Association of Journalists of the Republic of Poland), Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy Katolickich (Association of Catholic Journalists), Stowarzyszenie Pisarzy Polskich (Association of Polish Writers).

Was elected to the Tenth Term Sejm from the list of the Civic Committee and belonged to the Civic Parliamentary Club. During three Sejm terms, was member of the following committees: Territorial Self-Government Committee, Spatial and Communal Management Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee, National Defence Committee, and special committee examining legislative proposals on the universal access to archives and documentation of state security institutions. In the First Term Sejm, chaired the Christian-National Alliance Parliamentary Club and in the Third Term was the Secretary of the Solidarity Electoral Action Parliamentary Club.

Member of the Civic Platform political party.

Married, has one child.
