Born on 16th February 1929 in Szopienice, Upper Silesia, to a railroad worker's family.

In 1954, graduated from the Directing Faculty at the State Higher School of Theatre and Film in Łódź. In 1959 directed his first film - Krzyż Walecznych. Directed over 20 feature films, among them Nikt nie woła, Ludzie z pociągu, Sól ziemi czarnej, Perła w koronie, Paciorki jednego różańca, Śmierć jak kromka chleba, Zawrócony, Pułkownik Kwiatkowski and many TV dramas (Opowieści Hollywoodu, Do piachu, Emigranci, Kartoteka rozrzucona, Wielebni). Also worked in theatres, among others: Teatr Stary in Krakow and National Theatre in Warsaw (where he directed Tadeusz Różewicz's plays Kartoteka, Spagetti i miecz, Na czworakach).

In 1972, founded Silesia Film Production Company in Katowice and, since 1978, was its artistic director. Between 1981 and 1983, lectured in the Radio and Television Faculty at Silesian University in Katowice, and between 1985 and 1991 - taught directing at the Higher School of Theatre in Krakow. Since 1987, was the chief director and, between 1990-1991, head of the Polish Television Centre in Katowice. Public affairs writer - specializes in film and problems specific to the region of Silesia.

In 1981, chaired the Entente Committee of the Creative and Scientific Communities (Komisja Porozumiewawcza Środowisk Twórczych i Naukowych). The same year, was arrested and interned.

Since 1996, founding member of the Association of Polish Filmmakers. Member of ZAiKS Authors' Association.

In the Fourth Term Senate, was a member of the Science and National Education Committee and Emigration and Poles Abroad Committee. 2001-2005 - Deputy Speaker of the Fifth Term Senate and member of the Culture and Media Committee.

No political party affiliation.

Married, has four children.
